Is your child “Water Safe”?
Posted March 29, 2017When parents come to swimming lessons. they have a variety of goals in mind. Some want to reap the benefits of infant swim as early as possible and others want their child to learn the proper swim technique. But they all have one thing in common, each parent wants their child to be safe in and around water. The most popular question we get is “when will my child be water safe?”
Our answer is not simple.
We believe that nobody is ever “water safe”... not even Michael Phelps is drown proof. Accidents happen and unfortunately drowning is still the leading cause of accidental death in children under the age of 5 in the US.
Drowning is 100% preventable as long as you take the layers of protection against drowning. One of those layers is swimming lessons.
In a recent study the National Institute on Health found that formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning up to 88%.
Swim lessons don’t make your child 100% safer but 88%, which is pretty close right? Swimming lessons get your little one swimming safer sooner. The younger your child starts swimming lessons, the sooner they will attain these skills.
For any water activity, whether its inside or outside, you must always stay alert and vigilant. You should always keep your eyes on your child at all times.
To many “water safe” means the parent no longer has to be in the pool with the child during pool activities or on vacation. We understand the want to finally sit on the side and watch your little merman or mermaid have fun. However, accidents do happen and nobody is ever “water safe”!
